A call to prayer – for life

By vicardwm

It’s time to face facts.  Americans are a people inclined towards action.  This has served us well, but there is something else that must be the foundation of our actions if we are to be successful in any spiritual battle.  This is the Power of Prayer, and especially, the Power of the Rosary.  Our Lady is the Patroness of the United States under the title of the Immaculate Conception, and Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas.  It is to Our Lady under these titles that we direct our prayers, to ask for her intercession for the triumph of the Culture of Life.

The ultimate goal is a lofty one – 68,000,000 rosaries said for the triumph of the Culture of Life in our country.  Why 68,000,000?  68 million is roughly the number of Catholics in our country, and it’s also very close to the number of people who voted for Barack Obama in the recent election.  Therefore, there are at least 68 million reasons to do penance.  If Catholics would pray and act as they should, the Culture of Death would be put to rout in our country.  This battle is primarily spiritual warfare, and it’s time we finally get organized as an army.

The first initiative of Rosaries for Life is going to be the Inauguration Day Rosary Novena.  This Novena is going to last for 72 days – it consists of 4 sets of mysteries 9 times for the intentions, followed by 4 sets of mysteries 9 times in thanksgiving = 72 days of praying 5 decades).  The novena will begin on November 10th, the feast of St. Leo the Great (as well as the first day of the USCCB meeting) and end on January 20th, Inauguration Day.

There are five specific intentions.  You may specifically pray a specific mystery for a specific intention, or simply pray the whole rosary for all of the intentions.  If possible, pray the rosary in front of the Blessed Sacrament.  The intentions are these:

* For the triumph of the Culture of Life in the United States of America.

* For President-elect Obama, and for all of the leaders of the United States of America, that they will be led personally to Jesus Christ and His truth, and that they will lead our country in a positive direction.  Or in other words, as Archbishop Wuerl said, “That our nation’s new leaders be guided in their decisions with wisdom and compassion and at the heart of all of their decisions may there be a deep respect for and commitment to the sanctity and dignity of all human life and support for the most vulnerable among us.”

* For the hearts, minds and SOULS of the American people, that they will be turned back towards Jesus Christ and the “least of His brethren”.

* For a renewal of the virtues of purity and self-control, especially among our youth.

* In reparation for the scourges of abortion, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, euthanasia, cloning, artificial contraception, and all manifestations of the Culture of Death, and especially in reparation for the support and/or complacency that we as American Catholics have shown to these evils.

For now, if you are interested in joining this “army”, please drop a comment.  This blog is temporarily our home until we can get a full website up with content that will go far beyond what is here…stories of the power of the Rosary in the past,  etc.  Hopefully we can organize a major army of prayer going forward, God willing.  We owe it to the “least of our brethren” to try our best.

I Timothy 2:1-2 -First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intecessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men – for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly, and respectful in every way.

Ephesians 6:11-13 – Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

UPDATE: The site’s been up for 2 days and we already have around 4000 rosaries pledged.  If you don’t think you can commit to a 72 day novena, send me your commitment of whatever you CAN do.  If you can’t commit to anything this go-round , but are still interested in being a part of the prayer army, let me know that too!  The permanent website should be available this weekend or next week some time, thanks to a very generous offer of time and talent.  We’ve had some generous offers of treasure as well, and I am deeply grateful.  Please help spread the word about this initiative.  Our country is at a critical juncture…it seems in so many ways to be sliding towards a cliff.

This will be a real challenge for me because I find the rosary one of the most difficult prayers to say. But all the more reason to give it a shot. I’m in.

Reporting for duty! Great idea, Dave.

  5. elmo Says:

I’m in too. Thanks Dave. :)

Has anybody here participated in the 40 days for life campaign? That was 40 days of prayer, fasting and witness at abortion clinic sites throughout the nation. A very powerful experience. I recommend folks check out 40daysforlife.com, especially the blog that tells of wonderful fruits born out of just a short period of prayer and fasting!

  6. Pat Says:

I will begin praying this rosary today! And I’m sending this website on to all the prolife people I know.

  11. Lianna Says:

I shall be praying! This is such a great idea, Dad! And I will get other people to as well. We will fight against this culture of death that we’ve grown up in, with the most powerful weapon we have…Prayer.

  12. Mary Says:

Lianna emailed me – I already pray a rosary every day so starting Nov. 10th it’ll be fore these intentions!

  13. Del Torkelson Says:

  16. Shakespeare's Cobbler Says:

Thanks for this! I will try my best. Do let us know when the full site is up. Also, if we could throw in a few prayers leading up to the novena for grace for those of us who struggle to do so much praying, that’ll probably help too. We might throw in asking a priest, preferably an excorcist, for prayers for our protection from the Devil, ’cause I would be very surprised if he didn’t try to stop us.

Many thanks to all who have enlisted so far. My hope is that we will see our numbers skyrocket as time goes on, God willing. It will be uplifting to know that we are storming Heaven in unison with hundreds (hopefully, thousands) of others.

I think you’ll all be excited by the plans we have for the website too – it should be up by the time the novena starts on Monday; a mega-thanks to Kat for putting together the website. Our team will be putting a special (optional) prayer on the site to pray along with the rosary which goes along with the feast and/or season of the day. There will be interesting stories about past triumphs gained thru the power of the rosary, other ways of helping the pro-life movement etc.

If anyone has additional ideas, throw ‘em out there. This is your army as much as it is mine.

  23. ann Says:

    When do I start?

I don’t know what you have planned for the site going forward, but one model you might consider is http://www.onebillionbulbs.com You can get people to register and track their prayers, maybe even have the big bloggers set up “teams” and see who’s readers pray hardest! ;-)

  27. Sue Freivald Says:

  31. Leanna Says:

I participated in 40 Days for Life and this is a logical next step. Bless you for putting it together. Count me in!

  32. Jane Says:

count on me I say at least a rosary a day the 40 days for Life was good, but we still have a lot of praying and fasting or sacrificing to do

  33. Mark H Says:

Pretty much ever since I began hearing of a certain American proclaiming “G** D*** America!” I’ve had Jeremiah 29:7 on my mind:

“Pray for the welfare of the city to which I have exiled you; pray for it to the Lord, for upon its welfare depends your own.”

That verse, along with Jer 29:11, have been my ‘lifelines’ for some time now.

The rosary has always been a challenge to my discipline and time management, so I am hesitant to proclaim full commitment to this, but I am going to use this initiative to redouble my efforts. I will be with you most, if not all, days.

    God bless!

  34. Pansy Moss Says:

    I will do my best…

  35. Seth Says:

Hadn’t prayed the rosary for a while until I took up the Election Day novena suggested by Fr. Corapi. I’d forgotten how beautiful and deepfully prayerful it is. Count me in on this one.

I just came across the website http://www.rosary.org/ which has some good links and resourses, including a PDF of a 72 day rosary novena booket that might prove useful. Look for the post Rosary Novena Tracker.

  36. Maria Smith Says:

I’ll make this my intention for my daily Rosary.

May Our Lady lead all the 68 million Catholics to vote in support of Life in all future elections!

  37. Kasia Says:

Like Jack, I find the Rosary very difficult, and not infrequently skip even the minimum-of-one-decade my confessor wants me to do.

BUT, I will do my very best to fulfill the 72-day novena.

  38. vicardwm Says:

I totally sympathize with those who find the Rosary very difficult. I find myself gravitating towards other prayers, personally. It’s also difficult to find even 20 minutes sometimes in the middle of our busy days.

However, I do know that the intercession of Our Lady is extremely powerful. Our Lady is, in this way, somewhat like a magnifying glass. She will take our poor efforts, and magnify them exponentially as she brings them to her Son, and Our Lord.

The Rosary, though difficult for many, is a devastatingly powerful prayer, and when our permanent website is up, there will be stories to show just how powerful it is.

  39. Scott E Says:

Count our family in for this as well, Dave. That’s a total of 6 of us. I will send the link down to Tim and to as many of Lisa’s relatives as I can.

    This is a great idea!

  40. Maggie Says:

What a beautiful idea!! I’m in!

As far as finding the Rosary difficult- I used to, but it got easier each time. Now I look forward to it. My advice would be to really focus on each Mystery as you pray the decade of Hail Mary’s; let them be a sort of background hum as you think about the particular event in the life of Jesus.

What a fantastic weapon for the Church Militant!

  43. Eric and Cindy Says:

    Count us in.

One way or another, whether in the early dawn hours or just before retiring to bed, we’ll pray the 72-Day Novena for these intentions!

    May God abundantly bless you!

    CK

  44. Carol Says:

This is a good idea. I would like to suggest one more intention — to keep our country safe in the coming months from any international crisis. (Senator Biden predicted an international crisis would occur to test Obama. Perhaps if we ask Our Lady to keep us safe, we can prevent the crisis from occurring.)

  45. Liz Says:

I’m in. I’ll pass this along to others.

  46. Nancy Says:

I’m in. Thank you for putting this together!

  47. Veronica Says:

I will do my best to participate, with God’s grace!

  51. Judi Says:

I am sooooo in! My rosary is my weapon of choice when it comes to spiritual warfare!! If I can make a suggestion for all to consider: let’s not keep our rosaries a secret … hang a rosary on your rearview mirror in your car or truck; if you’re a walker or jogger — take it with you and pray while working out. Standing in line? Break out your rosary — witness to all others how powerful a tool it is!! Rest assured that you’ll meet up with someone who will be curious … use the opportunity to plant a seed! Who knows … maybe a fellow Catholic who hasn’t prayed the rosary in a while will be inspired to do so! Praise Him always!! :)

  52. Kay Rosa Says:

I’m so glad this was sent to me. I am privileged to report for duty.
I will pass this along and gather more soldiers.

  53. Carlie D. Says:

Thank you for this beautiful response to the election a pro-abortion president by 68 million Americans. The 68 million rosaries can be in reparation for the wayward votes of our fellow citizens. I commit to contributing 72 Rosaries to this effort for the intentions stated on Rosaries for Life. I plan to send this appeal to all Catholics I know and hope they join in. May God bless you and may the heartfelt prayers to Our Lady of Victory by Catholic American committed to building a Culture of Life aid Our Lady in her most difficult mission.

I’m in and am linking to your website at my blog.

  62. Penny Says:

First I want to thank MaryCO for posting the link and info for the Novena. Like others I have a hard time staying focused when I say the Rosary. I always seem to have interuptions or my mind starts to wander but this is really important and I know that Our Lady will bless all of our efforts. I don’t want to promise the full Novena because I don’t want to fail but that is what I will be shooting for with the help of all the Heavenly Hosts.

  63. Eileen H from the other Washington Says:

Count me in as well! Thank you for all your hard work and for wording the intentions so beautifully and in such a positive, uplifting manner.

  64. Penny Says:

I just sent the Novena info off to the Chariperson of our parish Pro-Life Misnistry here in western NY state, and to my daughter who is the administrative asst. at a Catholic school in S.E.Indiana in hopes of being able to get the word out to groups quickly.

  65. Leslie Hazinski Says:

I am in. I forwarded this to several Catholic Friends. I printed the prayer requests. Thanks so much.

  66. Telma Perez Says:

Thank you for organizing this holy effort. Our country is in desperate need of prayers, conversion, purity of heart. I’ll be praying the rosary and forwarding this request to my family and friends.

I am on my way to church now to say my Rosary in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Our church isn’t always open unless there is a service going on but it is on Wednesdays so I am going to take advantage of it.

  71. Ramona Says:

Thank you for starting this wonderful novena, Heaven will listen and here our prayers. Jesus, Mary, I love you, save souls.

  72. charlene shoen Says:
